An Important Safety Message Regarding Hand Sanitizer

March 26, 2021

The university has become aware through recent press coverage that benzene, a contaminant, had been found in specific lots of certain brands of hand sanitizer. Benzene is linked to an increased risk for certain types of cancer.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) confirmed that two of the brands identified as containing benzene, “artnaturals” and “Cleanhands”, had been distributed at Yale. Out of an abundance of caution, the university is asking you to stop using and discard all bottles of “artnaturals” and “Cleanhands” following these EHS instructions for proper disposal. You should review the complete list of products (found on page 14 of the linked document) in which benzene was detected and discard any products – whether or not they fall within the FDA-established limits – if you feel uncomfortable using them.

As of April 12, 2021, Purell® brand hand sanitizer is now available to order for your department through the YPPS website. The Yale Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) has verified that Purell® brand hand sanitizer is benzene-free.
