Laboratory Waste Disposal Training

This training program provides an orientation to Yale’s “Laboratory Waste Disposal Tool,” which assists researchers in identifying how radioactive, biomedical and chemical waste streams should be collected, packaged and managed in the laboratory. The training consists of a brief description of how wastes are processed on campus and a self-guided tour of the tool. 

2022 Chemical Waste Update:
Is your chemical waste one of the following special wastes?
- An empty chemical container or chemically contaminated labware
- Selection #1

Disposal instructions: empty chemical containers or chemically contaminated labware (chemical not listed by EPA as acutely hazardous waste)

• Empty the chemical container (container should not leak if inverted or only contain trace amount of solids) and remove cap and any chemical identifiers from label.
• If the empty container or labware contained a chemical prohibited from drain disposal by the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, they shall be sufficiently rinsed with water to remove any residue, the rinsate collected for disposal as hazardous waste, and the items placed into the normal trash (place glass in regular box and tape shut to prevent breakage).  You can review the list of prohibited chemicals at https://s3.amazonaws.com/ehs-training.yale.edu/EHS_PDF/ChemicalProhibitedList.pdf.
