Building/Construction/Renovation Waste

Certain building components may contain small amounts of radioactivity, Mercury, PCBs, lead and other heavy metals. Disposal of these materials is regulated by state and federal environmental requirements. Personnel in charge of construction projects that will remove these building components and devices must contact Environmental Health and Safety in advance for guidance on removal and disposal. Common construction site waste materials include lead paint, cleaning agents, oil-based and latex paints, fluorescent, Mercury vapor and other high-intensity lamps, fluorescent light ballasts, batteries, electronics such as computers, printers and monitors and Mercury-containing equipment such as old thermostats and pressure gauges. See Appendix I, J, K, L, M and N in the Hazardous Waste Management Procedure for more information.
