The YSM Controls Shop has shown a dedication to the highest level of response to issues associated with critical engineering controls and other controls associated with lab safety. It also serves an important role in ensuring that Yale’s containment facilities and other highly regulated facilities are managed and maintained on a daily basis to meet all requirements and is an essential part of HVAC emergencies in high-risk BSL-3, ABSL-3, and select agent labs. The shop conducts annual air balancing evaluations and provides reports for all animal facilities, all BSL-3 and ABSL-3 facilities, the Containment Insectary, and the Comparative Medicine Virology Containment Suite. In addition, the shop assists with the annual validation of BSL-3 labs in conjunction with EHS. These high-risk labs are few in number, but the shop is also responsible for responding to failure reports of chemical fume hoods. Its staff goes above and beyond, recognizing the critical importance of each fume hood in offering protection against hazardous chemicals for researchers, and works diligently to get the failed hoods back up and running as soon as possible.
