As researchers in a laboratory registered with the State of Connecticut’s Department of Public Health, please perform and document a weekly bump test on each emergency eyewash unit in your laboratory space.
Your Safety Advisor will provide you print outs of the eyewash inspection log for the 2026 calendar year on waterproof paper. Please post it near each emergency eyewash to record your weekly inspections.
Each week, every emergency eyewash unit must be tested for the following:
- Sufficient water flows from the eyewash.
- Streams of water meet in the middle and can sufficiently reach the user’s eyes.
- The water is clear.
If there are any issues, tag the unit as out of service and contact Facilities at 203-432-6888 to request the unit be repaired as soon as possible.
State inspectors will be looking for these eyewash inspection logs as part of their inspections and incomplete logs may result in a citation. You are required to keep your weekly eyewash inspection logs on file for at least three years.
Preparing for Emergencies
Ensuring your eyewash stations are working properly is critical in the event that an emergency arises. Time is precious when an incident occurs involving your eyes and realizing an eyewash station is not working properly during an emergency event may lead to injuries that could have been avoided with weekly inspections.
If you or a co-worker experiences a splash to the eye, follow the instructions below:
- Flush the eyeball(s) and inner surface of the eyelids(s) with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Using a nearby safety eyewash, forcibly hold the eyelids open to ensure effective rinsing.
- Call, or have a co-worker call, for medical assistance.
- Check for and remove contact lenses, if possible.
- Get medical attention promptly. Obtain SDS or other information source for chemical involved and provide to the appropriate emergency responder and healthcare provider.
- Contact EHS at 203-785-3555 for assistance and to report the exposure.
