Using underground storage tanks (UST) for fuels and other liquids are preferable in some cases, particularly in crowded urban areas. Because of the potential for undetected leaks into the surrounding soil and groundwater, their use is highly regulated and tanks and underground piping must meet certain standards such as double-wall, leak detection, corrosion protection and coating for steel tanks. Environmental Health and Safety coordinates inspections and tests and maintains certified operators on staff. Please contact Environmental Health and Safety prior to the installation, abandonment or removal of any UST, underground piping or fuel dispensing unit.
